About this composition:

Written for Robert Gibson and dedicated to him. Premiered at Pollack Hall on March 17, 1982. Trumpet, Robert Gibson, piano, alcides lanza.

The title is derived from "acúfenos", Spanish medical term for ringing in the ears, tinnitus in English. : A sensation of noise, like ringing or roaring, that is purely subjective.
Afúfenos V moves gradually from discontinuous, quasi monophonic materials to continuous and eventually polyphonic ones. At the same time the compass in use expands from a very restricted two octaves to a very wide range.

The tape part includes computer generated sounds, electronic ones and a recording of trumpet sounds. All these materials were modified and assembled at the EMS, McGill University. The computer sounds were produced at the EMS in Stockholm, Sweden. Technical assistance in Stockholm, thanks to composer Tamasz Ungvary.
