Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, Subtitled Public (2005)

Documentary Collection

Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, Subtitled Public, 2005
Introduction to the Collection

During their residency at the Daniel Langlois Foundation in the fall of 2007, Caitlin Jones and Lizzie Muller proposed a series of documentation case studies (1) about works included in the exhibition e-art: New Technologies and Contemporary Art at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.

Here is the second instalment of this series: Rafael Lozano-Hemmer's Subtitled Public Documentary Collection, courtesy of Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, Raphaƫlle Aubin, Caitlin Jones, Andrea Kuchembuck, Paul Kuranko, Lizzie Muller and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.

Visitors entering Subtitled Public are tracked and pursued by third person singular verbs that are projected on them as they move about the room. The only way to rid oneself of the projections is to touch another person. Visitors are not only subtitled, they are encouraged to communicate through touch, which becomes less a gesture dictated by space and more one that is a product of culture applied to that space. (2) The project exists in Spanish, English and French versions, and a German version is planned. In Montreal, the system switched from French to English twice every hour.
