Flauta y Viento, for flute and tape (1992)

I composed this piece in 1992 as part of the course requirements towards my Doctorate at Columbia University, and it was premiered at Miller Theatre, that year, with Beatriz Magalhaes-Castro, flute. The title (Spanish words for "flute and wind") is a good description of the piece. The tape part uses several kinds and variations of white noise or "hiss" throughout the piece, while the flute constantly plays aeolian sounds (breathy sound) thus incorporating itself into the windy atmosphere of the piece, transporting the audience -I hope- to ocean shores or windy canyons.
