About this composition:

the big dipper [1996-II], for accordion and tape

Written for and dedicated to Joseph Petric.

As a lifelong stargazer, one of the things I missed most after my move to the Northern hemisphere is the splendid night sky of the Southern - Canis Majoris with its fulgurant Sirius, the Pleiads cluster, and Orion with Betelgeuse and Rigel pointing all the way to the Southern Cross. In our Northern sky, I have enjoyed the ever dependable Big Dipper [Ursa Major]. The title of this composition is a nod in that direction.

The realizationof the tape part included pre-recorded accordion sounds, digital representations of accordion sounds done with a Proteus 3 [World] digital synthesizer. Donde at the SHELAN Studio using a G3 Macintosh computer, Akai sampler and Peak.

Premiered by Joseph Petric at the Music Gallery, Toronto, November 3, 2001.
