[En español...]  Nuestra cultura vegeta ("Our Culture Vegetates") was my first electronic music work, composed when I was 20 years old. It was the final work in an Electroacoustic Music course taught that year by Raúl Delgado Estévez at the Instituto de Fonología, Centro Simón Bolívar, and was composed using musique concrète techniques applied to sounds obtained by resonantly hitting the insides of a piano with timpani mallets, scratching and hitting tam-tams, hammering on scrap metal, textile machinery, and the author's voice. It is an ironic and sarcastic comment on the fact that there is very little support for artistic experimentation in the development of an original, vigorous and transcendental culture, compared to the everyday, comfortable attitude that only recognizes the "Truth of the Great Universal Culture," void of any analytical insertion criteria or meaning to our own reality and its transformation. Instead of ever-increasing cultural diversity, rich and enriching, exuberant, vital and dignified, we are left with an abyss of desolation and the meaningless consumption of a foreign and alienating culture.

The Spanish words and phrases that are heard in the recording mean: "Archive," "and now: add four spoonfuls of well assorted innovations, a pinch of salt, stir well and in an instant...," "You want to be someone! Let others think for you!" "Culture cargo four: warehouse five!" "Beware, inflammable, keep away from children, students, adults and all consumers," "But of course it's a reflection of reality... that sounds familiar…I've heard that before..." "Goes on," "It repeats," "Automatic," "Only," "Routine," "Tranquil," "and Monotonous," "Inertly rolling on."
