9 Evenings: Theatre and Engineering fonds

Documentary films on 9 Evenings

Series 2:

Documentaries on 9 Evenings: Theatre and Engineering (1995-). — 71 videocassettes.

Scope and content:

This series brings together materials associated with a number of documentary films being produced by Experiments in Art and Technology (E.A.T.). Swedish filmmaker Barbro Schultz Lundestam has been making these documentaries since 1996 using factual footage of 9 Evenings: Theatre and Engineering mainly filmed by Alfons Schilling in 1966.

Ten films have been planned, and three of these have been completed: Robert Rauschenberg: Open Score in 1997, John Cage: Variations VII in 2006, and David Tudor: Bandoneon! A Combine in 2010. While these documentaries have been screened at many international festivals, they are not planned for commercial or theatrical distribution.

In addition to the master tapes of the films (on video), the series includes preliminary sound/image edits as well as other materials from the production and postproduction phases. These primarily consist of raw video recordings of the interviews conducted to date with 9 Evenings participants: Per Biorn (engineer), Larry Helios (engineer), Harold Hodges (engineer), Billy Klüver (engineer) Jim McGee (engineer), John Giorno (artist), Robert Rauschenberg, Frank Stella (artist) and David White (artist). While varying in length (20 minutes to four hours), these interviews provide important information on the origins of the event, its reception and the interdisciplinary collaborations it produced.
