"New media art practices from Brazil and Peru"
At last, after more than two years of work, meetings and discussion, the
Contrainte/Restraint exhibition has become a reality. We are delighted to welcome it to Montreal this fall before it tours Lima and São Paulo in 2010. Designed by three up-and-coming curators – Julie Bélisle, Kiki Mazzucchelli and Miguel Zegarra – the show combines projects by nine new media artists from Peru and Brazil.
Contrainte/Restraint is the fruit of Groupe Molior’s many exhibition efforts with these two countries in the last few years. We have already shown works by Canadian artists a number of times in Peru and Brazil, at new media arts festivals and in exhibitions developed by guest curators. Meanwhile, our desire to showcase the practices of Peruvian and Brazilian artists has grown steadily. The
Contrainte/Restraint exhibition is a fulfillment of that desire.
A project of this magnitude depends on the commitment and involvement of many people. In particular, we would like to thank all of the show’s curators and artists. Thanks also go to our exhibition partners in Montréal, the OBORO artists centre and Maison de la culture Marie-Uguay, along with their respective teams. Lastly, we would like to express our appreciation to the Daniel Langlois Foundation for publishing the
Contrainte/Restraint catalogue on its Web site, an initiative that will promote the artists’ practices, and the guest curators’ viewpoints.
We are grateful for the support received from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec and the Conseil des arts de Montréal for mounting this project.
