"Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil." (Matthew 4,1)
All spiritual journeys need preparation. St. John of the Cross calls it "the dark night" (la noche oscura).
Not even Christ avoided it; in fact: the more important is the mission, the more rigorous must be the preparation. It is not accidental than this episode of the "temptations" comes just after Jesus' baptism and before the beginning of His preaching.
From the "burning bush" on, the fire has been a symbol of Divinity. The "fire of love" for St. John of the Cross, is the Holy Spirit, active manifestation of the Divine.
This process is not exclusive of Christianity; it happens necessarily in any kind of spiritual work.
