Apabatapabata, for tape. 1986

I composed this piece at the Centre Européen pour la Recherche Musicale (CERM) in Metz, France, in March and April 1986, while taking a course on electronic music with Mesias Maiguashca.

Before leaving my country, Ecuador, in 1983, I was part of an ethno-musicological research project directed by composer Jose Bergmanhs. We traveled to most ethnic nations in Ecuador and recorded their music. I took with me to Europe only one sample among all these recordings, which I found particularly beautiful: an "acapella" melody sung by an elderly Shuar woman, which I used in this piece as her homage. This simple melody -with the words: "Apabata Pabata"- is treated with filters, distortions and imitations.
