Patricia Martinez (Argentina)


Patricia Martinez (born in Buenos Aires, 1973) is active as composer, performer and improviser, playing piano, synthesizers and electronics. She was director of different ensembles of experimental and improvised music in Argentina, France and Holland, and is since 2001 conducting the group Zhéffiro.

She graduated as composer at the National University of Quilmes (Argentina, 1994). She attended The Annual Course in Computing Music 96/ 97 at the "Institut de Recherche et Coordination/Acoustique Musique" (IRCAM) from Paris. Her most important proffesors were: Tristan Murail, Brian Ferneyhough, David Lang, Klaus Huber, Alejandro Viñao, Louis Andriessen and Pablo Di Liscia. She studied piano, composition and guitar at the Manuel de Falla Conservatory of Music, National Conservatory of Music and La Plata University (Buenos Aires), among others institutions.

Martinez has worked as composer in residence in electroacoustic studios in France (GMEB, IRCAM), Holland (KonCon), Spain (LIEM), United States (VCCA, Bang on a Can Summer Music Institute), and Argentina (UNQ, Arte11).

She has received fellowships from: Virginia Center for the Creative Arts; UNESCO-Aschberg Bursaries for Artists Program; The Yvar Mikhashoff Trust For New Music Foundation (United States); University of Santiago of Compostela (Spain); Beheer Groep (Holland); National Scholarship of Creation of the National Fund of the Arts, Scholarship of graduation of the National University of Quilmes, and Antorchas Foundation (Argentina).

She has been composing works for solo instruments, large ensembles and electroacoustic music. She has worked in other creative areas such as literature, video and multimedia too.

Among other pieces Martinez composed: "Fines", "De cielos y profetas", recorded at ARTE 11, Buenos Aires, and "Resplandor de lo ausente", all three acousmatic pieces from 1992; "El alma al cuerpo" for piano and tape, from 1993; "Duelo intenso", acousmatic, realized at UNQui, Argentina, "Puentes ilusorios entre lo eternamente separado" for percussion and tape, "De la luz la sombra", acousmatic, "Del cuadro a la postergación", acousmatic, realized at the G.M.E.B. in Bourges, France, all four pieces from 1994; "Auto rre trato" for clarinet and synthesizer, "Hasta que el mar se quiebre" for tape, and "Restos de nada", acousmatic, all three pieces from 1996; "FRICS-project" for clarinete, piano and syntheziser from 1997; "se desprende y cae" for violoncelo and electronics, between 1997 and 1998, realized at the IRCAM in Paris, France; "Express", music for radio, between 1998 and 1999; "The last rite", musical theater for ensamble, two actors and tape, between 1996 and 1999; "despuesdelaconsumacion" for ensemble and electroacoustic sounds (14 performers) in 2000; "Quién me diese alas como de paloma" for conductor, cello, bass clarinet, clarinet, bass trombone, eletric guitar, CD player, piano and percussion, between 1998 and 2001; "Mueca" for electronics and video in 2001; "Espejos de tiempo", acousmatic, in 2002.

Selected awards: 1st Prize at The International Young Composers' Meeting -Gaudeamus Foundation (Holland); Residence at the International Competition of Electroacoustic Music (Bourges, France); Bourse at the "Luigi Russolo Competition" (Varese, Italy); 1st Prize at the National Composition Competition Juan Carlos Paz - National Fund of Arts; 1st Prize at the "Toda La Data Art Competition" of Patricios Bank Foundation (Argentina).
