Guillermo Galindo

Guillermo Galindo's composition work spans from the field of orchestral and symphonic composition to the domains of musical computer interaction, electro-acoustic music, sound dioramas, opera and sound design. His music has been performed at major festivals throughout the United States, Latin America, Europe, and Asia. From 1992 to 2001 Galindo has been composing music for the San Francisco based Asian American Dance Performances Unbound Spirit Dance Company. Since 1997 he has worked as a sound specialist at the California Library of Natural Sounds at the Oakland Museum of California. He has been a panelist in the area of composition for the Marin Arts Council in California. He has taught music, sound and composition at New College of California, Diablo Valley College and at the California College of Arts and Crafts where he presently teaches.

Guillermo Galindo studied at the Escuela Nacional de Música in México City and holds a BA in Film Scoring Composition from Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts and an MA in composition from Mills College in Oakland California.

Galindo's composition teachers include:
Federico Ibarra, Julio Estrada, Robert Kyr, Andrew Imbrie and Alvin Curran. He also studied North Indian music with master Ali Akbar Kahn.

Some of the awards granted to Guillermo Galindo include: California Arts Council Composers Fellowship 2000. American Composers Forum Continental Harmony Grant 1999, a Residency for Composition at the Bannff Center for the Arts 1999, the ASCAP Special Awards 1995-00, theJovenes Creadores Grant from the Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes 1994, Mexico City, Meet the Composer Grant 1997 and the Elizabeth Crothers Mills Award for Excellence in Composition, 1993.

During 2000-2001 Guillermo Galindo wrote and premiered two operas in collaboration with two MacArthur grant recipients Califas 2000 with performance artist/ writer Guillermo Gomez Peña and Decreation in collaboration with poet Anne Carson.

Series of pieces exploring sonic space and using 4 FM radio transmitters. In collaboration with composer Chris Brown.

A piece written for the "Lightning" , virtual instrument using infrared beams designed by Don Buchla.
